Why a DIY divorce can be problematic

On Behalf of | Apr 8, 2014 | Firm News

Many people in Belleville have probably heard of the online divorce, and some may think it sounds wonderful. A fast, easy and convenient way to get divorced? Who wouldn’t be interested? Unfortunately, online tools simply cannot address all aspects of a divorce.

One thing online divorce tools cannot do is freeze assets. Imagine that your ex is hiding assets from you. When you work through your divorce online, there is nothing to stop him or her from shuffling assets around, spending them or otherwise preventing you from getting what you deserve out of your divorce. If you file the traditional way, a court freezes marital assets, which helps to make sure you aren’t cheated out of what’s yours.

If you don’t think that your ex would hide assets from you, you may want to think carefully about the child custody aspect of a divorce. Although an online divorce can offer a few basic options for custody, these tools make it difficult to customize a custody agreement to fit your needs and the needs of your child.

These are just two of many reasons that filing for divorce online can be problematic. When you divorce, it is important to get it right the first time. Finding out after the fact that you deserved to get a greater portion of assets or more in alimony can be infuriating. The best way to avoid these issues and others is to work with an experienced attorney who can help make sure your divorce is right for you.
